Fixing Windows Auto Shutdown Issues Safely

Dealing with a computer that shuts down by itself can be very frustrating. It stops your work and makes you worry about your hardware. Luckily, most auto-shutdown problems on Windows can be fixed safely at home.

The best way to fix this depends on when and how the shutdown happens. Let’s look at the most common reasons and how to fix them step-by-step.

Scenario 1: The Computer Shuts Down Suddenly (Like the Power Was Pulled)

If your computer blinks off with no warning, the cause is usually overheating or power issues. Computers have built-in safety features to shut down before parts melt.

Check for Overheating: Feel the air coming out of your computer vents. Is it very hot? Are the fans making a loud roaring noise, or not spinning at all?

Clean the Vents: Turn off the computer and unplug it. Use a can of compressed air to gently blow dust out of the vents and fans.

Give it Space: Make sure your computer is on a hard, flat surface. Never use a laptop on a bed or carpet, because blankets block the airflow.

Scenario 2: The Computer Shows a Blue Screen Before It Restarts

If you see a blue screen with an error code right before it goes black, Windows is crashing due to a software or driver error.

Turn Off Automatic Restart: Windows is set to restart instantly when it crashes. Turning this off lets you read the error screen. Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard. Type sysdm.cpl into the box and press Enter. Click on the Advanced tab at the top. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings. Uncheck the box that says Automatically restart.

Click OK. Now, if the PC crashes, it will stay on the screen so you can write down the error code.

Scenario 3: The Computer Shuts Down During Normal Use or System Idle

If your PC shuts down normally (showing the “Shutting Down” screen) out of nowhere, a Windows power setting or an old software driver is likely to blame. YouTube·MDTechVideos2
